the darndest things

My friend Shelli is a first grade teacher in Seattle. Her school year started this past week, and this year she has one little guy--Michael--who is only five and should actually be in kindergarten. As part of getting that all sorted out, she gave him a math assessment. Shelli had about twelve blocks lined up and asked Michael to tell her how many blocks were on the table. He scrunched up his face all serious-like and started counting: oonnne, twooo, threee, four, fiiive, six . . . But after six, he picked up one of the blocks and used it like an action figure to say to the other blocks, in his best block voice, "Hello everybody!" Cracks me up. I have to admit, though, today has been a little like that for me--I have about enough concentration to count to six and then I just want to play.
