Blocking up the scenery

As we were out and about today, I saw three different signs that bugged me for various reasons:
1. On a KFC sign: “MOM WHAT IS A GIZZARD? $4 FOR A BOX. FRIDAYS ONLY.” This one struck me as too chatty.
2. On a billboard for Scheels: “gear. passion. sports.” None of these is like the others. I don’t get the connection. I thought maybe it was supposed to be some kind of progression, but that doesn’t work either.
3. At the library’s bookdrop: “Adult’s.” No, this is not the worst misuse of an apostrophe (and I suppose it could even be justified if the other bookdrop weren’t labeled “Children’s"), but anyone who works at the library should know better.
Okay, so these are not exactly worthy of FAIL Blog, but they made me kinda grumpy nonetheless.

For the ignorant among us can you clarify your third grump?
Renae — Nov 17, 2008 @ 10:16pm
Ha. I like “grump” as a noun not referring to a person.
“Adult’s” would indicate the bookdrop (or books, depending on how you interpret it) belonging to one adult. Like I said, it could probably be justified if they had used “Child’s” (also singular) to label the other bookdrop, but that would be silly.
I could be wrong, actually, but that’s how I see it.

I’m happy I know you too.
It was fun to photograph the dynamics of your family yesterday. My favorite part was when you said, “oh I’m getting my picture taken too, I forgot!”

I don’t get it - they are selling boxes of gizzards?
Bethany — Nov 17, 2008 @ 11:09pm
Also, did they omit the comma after “Mom”? That rankles, too.
Renae — Nov 18, 2008 @ 10:58am
@Bethany: Yeah, I have no clue what they were going for, but I would imagine that boxes of gizzards are on sale on Fridays.
And no comma:
MOM WHAT IS A
GIZZARD?$4 FOR A BOX
FRIDAYS ONLY

You spelled “children’s” wrong. And it made me kind of grumpy.
; )

Doh!

Ha! That’s funny. I remember seeing that sign at the library last time, and it bugged me, too.
As when a publication put out by a SCHOOL that is educatin’ our CHILDERN, uses “it’s” in a possessive way.
Not that I’ve ever seen that.....oh, wait, yes. Yes, I have.

Perhaps if you have gear (of any sort), you will then have passion which you find an outlet for through sports.
