DPP 9: Winter

As we were dropping Simon off for preschool this morning, the trees in Pioneers Park were heavy with snow and simply beautiful. I thought about how often I’ve heard someone comment that an idyllic winter scene “looks like Narnia.” I have said it myself many times. For the first time, though, it occurred to me that winter in Narnia is not actually a good thing—pretty perhaps, but not something to be clung to or treasured. Winter in Narnia is something that we long to see end.

Here in Lincoln, though, I am still loving the gorgeous snow. And I think it’s probably about time we start reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe to Simon.

This is lovely, Renae. I think half the battle of taking pictures is being willing to STOP in your tracks and simply take in a scene.

And you’re right! As beautiful as Narnia was in the snow, it was ruled in cruelty. See, I knew I loved spring for a deeper, more theological reason. wink

But winter in Narnia was only not something to be treasured because it had been artificially prolonged and robbed of its proper rhythm. (Always winter, never Christmas)  Winter would come again in Narnia after Aslan’s return (it wasn’t a tropical climate), but the proper rhythms of season into season were restored. Winter in Narnia is a good thing, but, like all good things, can become bad when there is too much of it. smile

(And it’s a gorgeous photo.)
