To mural or not to mural?

Posted in InspirationsQuestions That Need Answers

For a long time (at least two years), Jason and I have been planning to paint the dining room some great shade of red. More recently, we have been dreaming about decorating our fabulous red dining room with photographs we take when we visit the O’Donnells in Japan next spring (can’t wait! can’t wait! can’t wait!).

But then I was watching an episode of Top Design, and I fell in love with this tree:

And now I kind of want one in our home. I’m thinking on the dining room’s north wall—with the bookcase, opposite the kitchen. (I am also loving the tree in the new Indigo Bridge Books down in the Haymarket). What do you (including you, Jason) think?

Hmm. Personally, I think it looks a wee bit cheesy…but I tend toward minimalism when it comes to home decor. I suppose the upside of a mural is you could always paint over it easily if you got tired of it.

Yeah, I think you’re right, Bethany. Darn.

The challenge on the show was to decorate a bunker—to live in for fifty years. I suppose if you were living underground, it would be nice to remember the trees.

I think that mural is perfect for a family room/den area (not to mention a child’s room). It looks a bit on the crafty side, which might be a negative for room like the dining room. That being said, it could be really cool-looking if painted right. I can imagine a forest where the trees “hang” over the room as they wrap up onto the ceiling.

I LOVED THAT EPISODE.  Sorry, just had to get that out.  That was my favorite bunker, other than the usage of wicker baskets on the wall (mental note to self).  Anyway, I think the tree would be great for a child’s room, but I think it would hard to pull off anywhere else.  It was a bit of a risk even for Top Design, I think.  In any case, I have to admit that I was inspired by this episode to make a tree on the wall of my Sunday School room at Zion.  Granted, my design aesthetic was um, hijacked by some eager 8 year olds and their neon tree leaves and snakes.

That tree is a bit crafty—put perhaps sleek a sleek silhouet of a tree? You should experiment on big pieces of paper and let us all way in on the results.  ha!

Ooh, yeah. Have you seen any of those wall decal things that are cool right now? That could be a fun alternative. The nice thing is, you just peel them off when you get tired of them. I think some of them are really lovely, but I don’t think they’d work very well on our extremely old knobbly plaster apartment walls. They may be a bit pricey, though. You could probably find cheaper ones than these, but these are the ones I know of off the top of my head:
